It’s been ages since I’ve done a book cover inspired makeup look. It’s I would really like to make a regular feature–my unique contribution to the book community if you will. I haven’t felt up to it in the last few months, which is something I’ll be talking about in a more in-depth mental health post coming soon to a feed near you, but for now let’s just be happy I’m back with another look based on another gorgeous cover reveal.
The cover for Ace of Shades by the delightful Amanda Foody was revealed this week and as soon as I saw it I knew I had to do a makeup look for it. Black and red is the color scheme of my soul and everything about the cover fits exactly the vibes I get from the synopsis of the book. I’m fucking hyped about this book, y’all. It is scheduled to release just after my birthday and I just really feel like it was meant for me. The cover pretty much confirmed it.
Not sure what I’m talking about? Take a moment to bask in the glory of the cover and the book synopsis. I’ll wait.
Enne Salta was raised as a proper young lady, and no lady would willingly visit New Reynes, the so-called City of Sin. But when her mother goes missing, Enne must leave her finishing school—and her reputation—behind to follow her mother’s trail to the city where no one survives uncorrupted.
Frightened and alone, her only lead is a name: Levi Glaisyer. Unfortunately, Levi is not the gentleman she expected—he’s a street lord and a con man. Levi is also only one payment away from cleaning up a rapidly unraveling investment scam, so he doesn’t have time to investigate a woman leading a dangerous double life. Enne’s offer of compensation, however, could be the solution to all his problems.
Their search for clues leads them through glamorous casinos, illicit cabarets and into the clutches of a ruthless mafia donna. As Enne unearths an impossible secret about her past, Levi’s enemies catch up to them, ensnaring him in a vicious execution game where the players always lose. To save him, Enne will need to surrender herself to the city…
And she’ll need to play.
Everybody on board with my excitement now? I thought so. How could I not want to play around with a makeup aesthetic based on that cover? Unfortunately I don’t have much in the way of distinctly red eyeshadows, but I think I made do alright. What do you think?
Oh yeah. I dyed my hair again, by the way.
I love an excuse to do nice, dark eye makeup looks. They really are my fave, but they take more time than I ever have in the morning and also I would feel weird showing up to the office like this. And I don’t go out much because…you know…people. But this felt perfect for a night out in the city of sin chasing a con man who’s bitten off more than he can swallow.
I also 100% went out and bought this gorgeous red Smashbox liquid lipstick I’ve been eyeing for a few weeks because I finally had an excuse. I needed it. It really pulls the whole look together, don’t you think? It was a necessary expense. Even better, this shade is fittingly called Disorderly. Ideal for an adventure that requires breaking a few rules.
Products used in this look:
Note: I didn’t forget to list brushes. I just don’t really use anything special. Nice brushes are expensive as fuck and I just can’t be bothered. There are too many purple lipsticks to buy instead.

As you can tell, I sold my soul to Tarte a long time ago. What can I say? I’m a sucker for good packaging, and they make really good shit. Unfortunately for me, none of these are affiliate links. Dear Tarte: Call me. Seriously.
I had so much fun making this look. I absolutely cannot wait to get my hands on this book. What do you think of my makeup adaption of the Ace of Shades cover? Let me know in the comments! Also leave me recommendation of other books you want to see me do cover glam posts on. I really love doing these and would love to know what covers you’d like to see me attempt in the future.
