I currently offer 2 types of packages to writers: beta reads and editorial services. You will find the details and pricing of my services below. If you have any questions or would like to hire me for either of these services, please email me at katsyxo[at]gmail[dot]com.
What’s Included in the Beta Read Package?
Beta reads help to offer a reader’s perspective of your story, usually after you’ve already made a round or two of revisions and edits. When you feel like your manuscript is finished–or at least as finished as you can get it without an outside perspective–it’s time to get a beta reader.
As a beta reader I focus primarily on storytelling elements: characters, plot, world building, pacing, etc. I will add comments throughout your manuscript offering insight as to what is working well within your story, and what is not. For example, here are a few of the questions I will focus on answering while beta reading.
- Are your characters complex and well developed?
- Are their relationships with other characters realistic?
- Does your plot rely on over-used tropes or cliches that may turn readers off?
- Is your world building internally consistent?
In addition to commenting within your manuscript, you will also receive a separate page of my overall thoughts about your story.
Genres I Can Beta Read For
As beta reads require a familiarity of and interest in the specific genre of your story, I can only offer beta reads for the genres which I personally read and enjoy. The genres I currently offer beta readings for are:
- YA Fantasy
- YA Contemporary
- NA Fantasy
- NA Contemporary
- Historical Fiction
Beta Read Pricing
I currently charge $100 to beta read manuscripts ranging from 50,000 – 100,000 words. If your manuscript falls outside of this range, please include the word count in your email, as pricing will differ.
What’s Included in the Editorial Services Package
My editorial services are perfect for writers planning to self publish, or for anyone who just wants another set of eyes on the page before you begin querying.
The editorial package does not include any commentary or feedback on the storytelling elements of your manuscript–it is limited exclusively to editing for spelling, syntax, grammar, and general clarity. I will focus on noting any scenes where the writing is unclear or confusing, sentences that need editing, and other surface level aspects of your manuscript. I will ensure all your quotations are closed (you’d be surprised how often published books have misplaced quotation marks), all the spelling mistakes and autocorrects are caught, and all the commas are in their proper places.
Note: I will never make any major editorial changes without consulting you. While I will make basic grammar and spelling corrections, anything dealing with syntax, clarity, or other broader issues will be left as a comment on your manuscript for you to review and consider.
I currently charge $150 to edit manuscripts ranging from 50,000 – 100,000 words. If your manuscript falls outside of this range, please include the word count in your email, as pricing will differ.
Why Should You Hire Me?
I have degrees in both English and History–both of which are writing intensive programs. As an English major, I spent 5 years deep reading, analyzing, and critiquing stories. To put it simply: I know what makes them tick. I have also been an avid reader my entire life and have been an active member of the digital book community for years. I know what readers love, what they despise, and what they desperately want more of.
I also have 4 years trained, professional experience as a writing consultant at the Grand Valley State University Writing Center, one of the most well-respected writing centers in the United States. I performed over 600 consultations and helped guide writers of all skill levels through all stages of the writing process.
Finally, I am a writer myself, which means I am intimately familiar with the highs and lows that come with writing a novel. I can offer you both the perspective of a potential reader as well as that of a fellow writer.
Turn around time for both services will depend upon the length of your manuscript as well as my personal schedule. If you have specific time constraints, please let me know in your email. Additionally, I cannot guarantee acceptance of every manuscript. I reserve the right to turn down manuscripts if I do not feel I have time to give them the attention they deserve or if I feel I am not a good fit for your story, especially if you are requesting a beta read. All manuscripts will be considered on an individual basis.
If you have any questions or are interested in requesting my services, please email me at katsyxo[at]gmail[dot]com
